Last week, USC and UCLA announced their intention to exit the Pac-12 conference in favor of the Big Ten. Both programs will join as full-time members by August 2, 2024 after being separated from Pac-12 for more than 94 years.
USC athletic director Mike Boehn released a statement following the news, expressing his excitement at the new opportunity.
“We intend to terminate our membership of the Pac-12 conference when the current Pac-12 media rights agreement expires in August 2024,” Bohn said.
“We look forward to competing in the Pac-12 over the next two years and would like to express our sincere gratitude to the conference and its member institutions for decades of wonderful experiences. The Trojans’ outstanding sporting heritage will always be synonymous with the Pac-12, and there are so many iconic moments and memories that we will forever cherish. We hold the Pac-12 and our respected colleagues in high esteem.

This is the most volatile and uncertain era in American collegiate athletics history. USC needs to make sure it’s in the best position and prepared for whatever happens next, and it’s our responsibility to always evaluate potential opportunities and be ready to make changes if needed. Ultimately, the Big Ten is the best home for USC and Trojan Athletics as we venture into the new world of collegiate sports. We are pleased that our values align with the League’s member institutions. We will also benefit from the stability and strength of the conference; the athletic caliber of the Big Ten institutions; the increased visibility, presence and resources that the conference will bring to our student-athletes and programs; and the ability to grow engagement with our passionate alumni across the country.
For more than two years, our athletics department has supported our vision to be the most student- and athlete-centric program in the country. Central to this mission is a responsibility to provide the resources necessary for our student-athletes to thrive on and off the field, and to ensure our student-athletes compete for championships at the highest levels and on the biggest stages. By joining the Big Ten, we are confident that we will continue to deliver on that promise to our current student-athletes and generations of student-athletes who will wear the Cardinal and the Gold in the future.
I am so grateful to President Carol L. Folt for her bold vision, courageous leadership, and decisive action. From the beginning, she and I were united in our goal of building an athletics department that would set the standard for student athlete support. I also thank former Board of Trustees Chair Rick Caruso, incoming Chair Suzanne Nora Johnson, and all other members of the Board of Trustees for their unwavering support of our student athletes and the Trojan athletics program.
The future of USC athletics is bigger, brighter, better and more boundless than ever. Every Saturday at the Colosseum will feel like the granddaddy of them all! Trojan Family, the best is yet to come.”
