Senior with records in sight for the 2022 season

HOUSTON- University of Houston football quarterback Clayton melody was placed on the preseason watch list for Season 46th annual Davey O’Brien Award, the Davey O’Brien Foundation announced on Tuesday.

The award, considered the oldest and most prestigious national quarterback honor presented to the nation’s top collegiate quarterback, highlights Tune alongside 34 other quarterbacks chosen based on performance and expectations for the 2022 season.

Houston is one of three state programs to have a returning starter on the watchlist along with SMU and UTSA, as well as one of three American Athletic Conference quarterbacks.

Among the first-timers on the 2022 Davey O’Brien Award watchlist, Tune ranked third in completions and passing touchdowns and fourth in passing yards last season. In addition to all the statistics of the winners from last season, Tune took 10th placeth in completions and 11th passing yards and touchdowns.

Tune capped a career year in 2021, recording career highs in games played (14), completions (287), passing yards (3,550), passing touchdowns (30), and completion percentage (68.3) while leading the Cougars to a 12-2 overall record , an American Athletic Conference Championship game appearance and a Birmingham Bowl win over Auburn. His performance on the field catapulted him up the Houston record books, advancing to the seventh all-time passing yards of his career and fifth all-time passing touchdowns in program history.

A midseason watchlist will be announced on October 18 that will include the 35 quarterbacks on the preseason watchlist, including any quarterbacks added to the list during the first seven weeks of the season.

A second 35-strong midseason watch list will be released on October 25 before 16 semifinalists are announced on November 8. Three finalists will be selected with the winner of the 46th The annual Davey O’Brien Award was announced on December 8th at the Home Depot College Football Awards.
