Summer is here and romance is in the air! The newest addition to the queer rom-com market this year is fire islandan upcoming American film directed by Andrew Ahn. Ahn’s short film, andy, previously screened at the Slamdance Film Festival and the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival.

Inspired by Jane Austens pride and prejudice, fire island is a summer story of two best friends, Noah (Joel Kim Booster) and Howie (Bowen Yang). The duo and their friends embark on a wild and unforgettable week-long vacation on Fire Island, a popular gay travel destination not too far from Long Island’s south shore. Pack your bags and don’t forget to bring a bottle of cheap rosé. The audience awaits a wild journey to fire island. Here are all the details about the film that have been revealed so far:

When does Fire Island premiere?

fire island is Premiering on July 3, 2022. It will be released exclusively on Hulu in the US, but will eventually be available on Disney Plus under Star to an international audience.

plans for fire island were already in development three years ago. On September 25, 2019 there was news about a comedy series with the title side tripstarring, created and written by Booster himself, was in the works for the now-defunct streaming TV network quibi. On March 11, 2020, side trip received a series order, which Jax Media was responsible for producing and Stephen Dunn (filmmaker from closet monster) as its director.

Unfortunately, after Quibi shut down on December 1st, 2020 side trip was kept in development limbo. However, it only lasted until June 30, 2021, when Searchlight Pictures bought Booster’s screenplay and turned it into a retitled feature film fire island. Dunn was eventually replaced by Ahn as director, and eventually production followed.

Is there a trailer for Fire Island?

That fire island follower was released on YouTube by Hulu and Searchlight Pictures on April 25, 2022. The two-and-a-half minute trailer begins with Noah waking up with a series of missed calls and hastily making his way to the ferry fire island. On the ferry, we see Noah hugging his best friend Howie and we get a sense of how close their friendship is. The trailer is followed by a montage of clips being shown fire island in all its summertime glory – beach parties, excessive (but responsible) drinking and sheer summer gay romance.

What is the plot of Fire Island?

The official synopsis for fire island reads:

A group of queer best friends gather in the Fire Island Pines for their annual week of love and laughter, but when a sudden change in events jeopardizes their summer in gay paradise, their bonds as a chosen family are stretched to the limit.

fire island is a loose adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice” and maintains the popular fallacy romantic comedy that everyone loves. but fire island offers a refreshing, modern look thanks to its queer twists and mostly AAPI casting.

Who is in the cast of Fire Island?

what sets fire island Market aside, its fully POC, LGBTQ mainstay. Joel Kim Booster plays Noah, the main character who largely resembles Elizabeth Bennet pride and prejudice. Booster has made a name for himself as a comedian thanks to him Comedy Central stand-up gifts Special. He has also performed in stand-up conan and The Late Late Show with James Corden.

Noah takes a wild vacation on Fire Island with his buddies, including Howie (Bowen Yang), the skeptical best friend who’s equal parts hopeful and equal parts cynical about finding true love — mostly on fire island. Yang is another game changer in the comedy scene and will Saturday night live‘s first Chinese-American and third openly gay male performer. However, Yang made his mark with his hilariously absurd Titanic Iceberg sketch, which garnered a lot of attention.

Not much is known about the characters of fire island yet, but we do know that the film boasts an impressive, star-studded cast. Experienced comedian Margaret Cho stars as Erin, the designated “mother hen” of Noah and Howie’s friends group. James Scully plays Charlie, a doctor who knocks Howie off his feet. In the meantime, How to get away with murder‘s Konrad Ricamora stars as Mr. Darcy-inspired love interest Will.
