Trailer, photos of Ana De Armas, release date, cast and plot

If you feel like you’ve heard of Ana de Arma’s Marilyn Monroe movie Blond for a long time, you are right! That knife out Alum first joined the project in 2019 (an old time before Ben Affleck and the cardboard cutout saga), but lockdown in 2020 and other delays were pressing Blond back – and back again. Even writer-director Andrew Dominik joked about the extended rollout, recently telling Vulture, “In time Blond comes out, everyone will get tired of talking about it.”

But that seems unlikely given the intrigue (and controversy). Blond has made it to court so far. Based on the 2000 novel by Joyce Carol Oates, Netflix describes the film as a “fictionalized portrait” of Marilyn Monroe — and of Norma Jeane Baker, the woman before the stage name.

In his highly anticipated film, Dominik also told Vulture, “There’s something about it to offend everyone.” That could play a part blondes lively NC-17 rating the filmmaker came up with for Netflix Queue. “I seem to get into situations where people see me as provocative, but that’s never what I try to do,” he said. “I’m just trying to say it as clearly as possible. My goal is for you to fall in love with Marilyn.”

You will decide very soon if Dominik is successful in this mission. Ahead, all we know Blond so far – including the newly released trailer and the date of the fall premiere.

Starring alongside de Armas, the Blond The cast includes Julianne Nicholson as Norma Jeane’s (Marilyn) mother, Adrien Brody as the playwright and Bobby Cannavale as the ex-athlete. Why the vague nicknames? According to Netflix, the film takes “dramatic license” and features “characters based on historical figures, as well as amalgamations of people who may have known them” — though The Playwright and The Ex-Athlete are reportedly modeled after Monroe’s IRL exes. Arthur Miller and Joe DiMaggio, respectively.

Blond plot

The plot of Blond seems similarly experimental. As Dominik said at a 2019 Q&A via Collider, the dialogue is sparse and he “[doesn’t] Think there’s a scene in there Blond that’s longer than two pages.” As the official Netflix synopsis states:

Blond boldly reimagines the life of one of Hollywood’s most enduring icons, Marilyn Monroe. From her unpredictable childhood as Norma Jeane, to her rise to stardom and romantic involvements, Blond blurs the lines of fact and fiction to explore the widening chasm between her public and private selves.

So, if it wasn’t clear by now – by no means expect an easy biopic. As de Armas Queue said, “Our film is not linear or conventional; it should be a sensual and emotional experience.”
