What is the Sidewalk Film Festival?

The Sidewalk Film Festival is a popular annual film festival in the heart of Birmingham’s historic theater district. Running from August 22-28, the festival celebrates independent films and filmmakers and welcomes 15,000 film lovers to The Magic City every year!

How many films can you see during the event? As many as you like. According to Chloe Cook, Managing Director of Sidewalk Film, this year’s festival will feature more than 250 films across 10 screens!

What’s going on?

Ready for the series of films to be screened during this year’s Sidewalk Film Festival? With over 250 film screenings throughout the festival we can’t cover them all but here are a few to pique your interest.

1. A walk with Joey

  • Director: Dana Lynn Falletta and J Neil Bloomer
  • Genre: Documentary (Alabama, Life & Liberty)
  • Summary: Joey Hale survived a brain tumor at a very young age and braved all odds to recover, thanks to some much-needed inspiration from his beloved football team, the San Diego Chargers, and a close friendship with former Auburn player Lionel “Little Train” James. Now Joey is taking it to others around Birmingham and beyond, bringing smiles of service and charity to his customers at Publix and the less fortunate. A walk with Joey is a loving portrait of a true Alabama original whose life has touched thousands.

2. Funny sites

  • Director: Owen Klin
  • Genre: narrative
  • Summary: In this dark comedy from A24 and producers Josh and Benny Safdie, a young cartoonist drops out of school to start his own business in the seedy suburbs of Trenton, New Jersey. Actor Owen Kline’s directorial debut, funny sides is a sleazy and gleefully tasteless look at a subculture of comic-obsessed young men.

3. Good girl Jane

  • Director: Sarah Elizabeth Mintz
  • Genre: narrative
  • Summary: A lonely teenage girl gets caught in the wrong crowd in this stunning debut film from Sarah Elizabeth Mintz. Rain Spencer stars in the title character, who meets a group of trendy friends and begins experimenting with drugs after their parents’ divorce. But Jane soon falls under the rule of a charming older man – and things spiral out of control. You may think you know this story, but you’ve never seen it done so well. Good Girl Jane won Best Narrative Film and Best Performance for Spencer at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival.
