The case for Mac Jones: In his second year as quarterback with the Patriots, Mac Jones will face heightened expectations after a successful rookie season.

According to NFL analyst Peter Schrager, the potential for Jones could be higher than expected.

“I said earlier this offseason [to] Give us a dark MVP candidate, ‘What about Mac Jones?’” Schrager explained. “I got laughed at on that show.”

“What if the Patriots are the team to win 14-3 this year? What if the Patriots are the team that takes first place in the AFC East?” Schrager said. “Mac Jones is why I’m confident this team can be a contender because he was great from the start as a rookie. How do we know this is the ceiling? He’s lost 15 pounds. Mentally he is fine. And the players and this coaching staff love him.”

Jones threw for 3,801 passing yards, 22 touchdowns and a 67.6 completion rate in 2021. New England finished 10-7 and returned to the playoffs after a year-long absence.

On that day: In 1986, the Red Sox traded for Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver. As a 41-year-old in his final major league season, Seaver added experience along with a 3.80 ERA in 16 starts for the eventual American League champions.

In addition to Seaver news, Argentina won the 1986 World Cup in Mexico City, beating West Germany 3-2 in the final. It was the culmination of a legendary tournament run by Argentine superstar Diego Maradona.
