The Maverick creator reveals why Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan aren’t starring in Tom Cruise

Touted as one of the most anticipated films of the year, it stars Tom Cruise Top Gun: Maverick hits theaters on May 27, 2022. The film is a sequel to 1986 top gun and will star Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris and Val Kilmer, with Cruise and Kilmer reprising their roles from the first film, but Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan will star in the sequel Films didn’t show up, and director Joseph Kosinski recently revealed the reason why.

In a recent conversation with Insider, quoted by ET Canada, director Joseph Kosinski opened up about why Kelly McGillis and Meg Ryan aren’t appearing in the film’s sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

He said, “These weren’t stories that we tossed around,” adding that he didn’t want every plot to always turn around and look back, as he feels the added spice of new characters was an important element in the film.

Previously, in 2019, McGillis revealed the reason she was not approached to reprise her role. She explained: “I’m old and I’m fat and I look age appropriate for my age. And that’s not what this whole scene is about.” But fans can’t wait to see Tom Cruise as their favorite character, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, from the 1986 drama.

Directed by Joe Kosinski Top Gun: Maverick is written by Peter Craig, Justin Marks and Eric Warren. Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced the first film with the late American film producer Don Simpson, also produced the upcoming film with Cruise and Skydance CEO David Ellison.
