The first trailer for Avatar 2 is finally here

Avatar, the biggest movie in box office history (and also the most screened one) is officially getting a sequel.

A record-breaking number of viewers watched the first Avatar 2 trailer in its first 24 hours of broadcast.

After being confirmed a few years ago, the Avatar sequel received an official title in April and now the first trailer is available for everyone.

It’s been a long journey for Avatar: The Way of Water to get here. 20th Century Studios first planned to bring the film to theaters in December 2014, but it was delayed several times. A change of hands with Disney at the helm and nearly a decade later, fans are hoping the current December 16 release date sticks.

As things stand, Disney is asking a lot of Avatar 2. The first film, released in 2009, grossed $2.847 billion at the global box office, which is the highest ever. Since then, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame is the only film that came close. Avatar 2 is lucky to hit the $2 billion mark. Still, Disney is confident enough to begin filming Avatar 2, which is slated for release in 2024, with a fourth film planned for 2026 and a fifth in 2028.

According to the official synopsis of Avatar: The Way of Water, the sequel is set “more than a decade after the events of the first film” and will “tell the story of the Sully family (Jake, Neytiri and children), the troubles that follow them , the lengths they go to to keep each other safe, the battles they fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.”

$2.8 billion at the global box office is a tall order for Avatar 2, but over $1 billion is a realistic goal and very achievable.

For those who can’t remember what happened in 2009’s Avatar, Sam Worthington’s Jake Sully ended up transfiguring himself into his Avatar permanently with the help of the Tree of Souls. Aside from Jake, Norm, and a handful of others, all humans leave Pandora and return to planet Earth. Jake then prepares to start a new life with Zoe Saldana’s Neytiri, which is likely where the sequel will begin.

The most interesting thing about the trailer is that it has become a showcase of the tremendous leap in VFX technology from 2009 to the present day, giving audiences a reason to see Avatar 2 in theaters this holiday season.

In a few months until Avatar: The Way of Water premieres, you might want to look for your 3D glasses.

It seems Disney isn’t the only one confident that Avatar 2 will do well at the box office. Warner Bros. Discovery also believes it can’t keep up with the much-anticipated sequel as it has decided to delay the release of Shazam! Fury of the Gods through December 21st.
