Shomit Dutta's STUMPED is streamed live from Lord's with Stephen Tompkinson and Andrew Lancel

The multi-award-winning Original Theater Online presents Shomit Dutta’s darkly funny new play live from the home of cricket, celebrating two great theater men and their love of the sport. Streaming live from Lord’s Cricket Ground on Saturday 10 September 2022 at 7pm, Stumped will star Stephen Tompkinson (Brassed Off, Drop The Dead Donkey, DCI Banks, Wild at Heart) as Samuel Beckett and Andrew Lancel (Coronation Street, The Bill) as Harold starring Pinter. Stumped is directed by Guy Unsworth. Booking is now open (

After the show there will be a discussion with renowned theater critic Michael Billington OBE, former England cricket captain Mike Brearley OBE and writer and cricket journalist Emma John. This will be broadcast as part of the live stream.

Before writing his seminal works Waiting for Godot and Endgame, Samuel Beckett was a cricketer: he is still the only Nobel laureate to figure in Wisden’s pages as a first-rate player. His good friend and fellow Nobel Prize-winning author Harold Pinter, whose best-known works include The Birthday Party, The Dumb Waiter and The Homecoming, described cricket as “the greatest thing God created”. This brilliantly funny new piece is a capricious take on what the friendship between these two great men might have been like, and pays homage to their writing and love of the game.

Baffled playwright Shomit Dutta reviews books on cricket and classics. He has been a member of Harold Pinter’s Gaieties CC cricket team for over twenty years and was captain in Pinter’s final years. He proposed a blue plaque for Samuel Beckett, which was unveiled in 2016. Shomit said: “I am thrilled that my play Stumped is being performed at Lord’s, the Home of Cricket, produced by the wonderful, award-winning Original Theater Company. I can’t wait to see the play brought to life by two highly skilled and talented actors.”

The play is a witty and wonderful addition to the cricket literary canon and we are confident that its performance will provide great entertainment online to a large and enthusiastic crowd of MCC members and guests, as well as countless cricket and theater fans around the world.”

Alastair Whatley, Artistic Director, Original Theater Company, said: “I couldn’t be more excited to present the world premiere of Shomit’s brilliant, witty, beautiful black comedy at Lord’s in September. The advent of digital theater has allowed us to break new ground in presenting and sharing plays, making previously exclusive events accessible to all, and this production represents an opportunity to create something truly unique and spread it worldwide. It’s going to be very special.”

The creative team includes director Guy Unsworth, screenwriter Shomit Dutta, set and costume designer David Woodhead, sound designer Dominic Bilkey, composer Sophie Cotton and camera direction from North South.
