Romantic drama fans have a new movie on their watch list this summer. First love, starring Hero Fiennes Tiffin (Jim) and Sydney Park (Ann), follows two high school students on their journey of first love and heartbreak. Described as “a poignant look at a young man’s difficult entry into adult life”. First love contrasts the love story of Jim and Ann with the relationship of Jim’s parents struggling after a financial crisis. It is slated for a summer release from Voltage Pictures.
The film was originally confirmed by Deadline in May 2021. AJ Edwards, known for The Better Angels and Getting too old for something, wrote and directed the play. Diane Kruger serves as executive producer along with producers Nadine de Barros, Henry Kittredge and Lucas Jarach. Edwards is also listed as producer, with Tyler Glodt and John Williams as co-producers and Todd Spradlin as associate producer.
Are you ready to relive your first love? Here’s everything you need to know First love before it hits theaters.
First Love: The Storyline
Like many high school seniors, Jim and Ann decide where to go to college, figure out where life should take them, and test themselves by forming a new relationship before moving to separate shores. Jim seeks an ongoing scholarship to the University of California, Los Angeles, and Ann is accepted into a New York university. Based on the trailer, he stalks her, forges a note to get her out of class, and seems to suffer the greatest heartbreak at their alleged breakup. He tells his father (Jeffrey Donovan) that he wants to call her, but the paternal character tells him to take his time. Will time work in your favor?
Jim’s parents seem to like them both very much, but Ann’s parent figure doesn’t seem so sure. She doesn’t want Ann to commit so young, which is understandable but certainly raises doubts in the high school senior’s mind. Neither of them has been in a serious relationship before, meaning the other is their first love, possibly first breakup, and first everything.
The two teenagers aren’t the only ones trying to navigate the future. The synopsis describes Jim’s parents as “struggling with the family fallout from a 2008 financial crisis,” which may be why he seems so attuned to the ongoing scholarship. It also indicates the time period that the film takes place, which is a little different from most romance films that come out today. Will this crisis strain his parents’ relationship? Will his scholarship affect or hamper his ability to go to college? Showing the struggles of each generation, the paired stories can help educate Jim and his parents on the best way forward.
First love: The cast
Hero Fiennes Tiffin and Sydney Park portray Jim and Ann, respectively. Audiences probably know Fiennes Tiffin from his starring role as Hardin Scott in the film According to franchise, the Wattpad-to-screen sensation. Park is recognizable from her work in the Walking Dead and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists. Diane Krueger (Troy, National Treasure) and Jeffrey Donovan (fire notice, trailer hitch) play Jim’s parents. Blake Weise plays Nick, who appears to be one of Jim’s friends who helps him through his heartbreak.
The other cast members appearing on the film’s IMDb page include Diane Venora (Bird) as Aunt Irene, Nikolai Tsankov (manifest, The American) plays Father Alex, Harrison Cone (Stage Fright) as Tol, Elena Heuzé as Kim, Chris Galust as Nick Albright, Bruce Wexler (euphoria, brotherhood) as Vance Hughes, Kiara T. Romero as Liz, Dominique Gayle as Natalie, Makeba Pace (To be honest) as Sonia and Stephen Singleton as Kris. Nanrisa Lee (Bosch, The morning show) is listed in an unnamed role.
According to the trailer, the film will be released on June 17, 2022. Based on the trailer released by Nu Metro, other regions can expect the film around or the same date, with South African audiences able to see the film on June 24, 2022.
Everything else we know
First love This isn’t the first time director Edwards and Kruger have worked together. The two were part of The Better Angels, starring Kruger with Sarah Lincoln and Edwards directing and writing. The film is a historical drama that deals with the early life of President Abraham Lincoln, specifically his childhood in Indiana. It debuted at Sundance in 2014. It should be interesting to see the two back together on such a different project.
It’s also not the first time Fiennes Tiffin has starred in a Voltage Pictures film. Voltage Pictures is the production company of According to Series, making it the fifth film and second major project he’s done with them. However, it is the first time he has used an American accent in any of their films. Fiennes Tiffin’s American accent almost renders his voice unrecognizable in the trailer, but it’s a welcome change from the British accent fans associate with the dark and moody Hardin Scott.
Make a mixtape and reminisce (perhaps not because of the first love, but because of the crisis). First love hits theaters this summer.
