Spacey was accused of sexual assault and misconduct by more than a dozen men in 2017. Now he’s playing his biggest role since the allegations.
Five years (and several bizarre vacation videos) after Kevin Spacey was cut from Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World, the “American Beauty” actor is returning to Hollywood.
The Oscar winner will star in the upcoming British-Hungarian-Mongolian co-production ‘1242 – Gateway to the West’, which is reportedly his biggest feature film since allegations in 2017. Also starring are Eric Roberts, Christopher Lambert, Terence Stamp and newcomers Jeremy Neumark-Jones and Genevieve Florence.
“1242” tells the story of Batu Khan, the grandson of Genghis Khan’s military commander, who was elected supreme commander of the western part of the Mongol Empire. According to an official synopsis, in 1242 Khan is confronted with a deeply spiritual man named Cesareani (Spacey) and a castle in Hungary that halts his invasion of Europe and ultimately causes his downfall.
Hungarian director Peter Soos directs the film with a screenplay by Aron Horvath and Joan Lane. Filming will begin filming in October 2022 in Hungary and Mongolia.
Spacey was previously accused of sexual assault by more than a dozen men – including Broadway veteran Anthony Rapp. In 2018, Spacey was charged with indecent assault in connection with an alleged 2016 incident involving a teenager; The charges were later dropped after Spacey pleaded not guilty.
Spacey was last seen in the movie in 2018’s Billionaire Boys Club, but he reportedly had a small role in Franco Nero’s upcoming The Man Who Drew God, as announced last year. According to IMDb, the film is currently in post-production. Nero’s real-life wife, screen legend Vanessa Redgrave, was originally announced as the film’s lead, but instead issued a statement about Spacey’s casting backlash.
“Vanessa Redgrave’s name has been popping up in recent stories surrounding the casting of upcoming film ‘The Man Who Drew God,'” the statement said. “While there has been discussion of the possibility of her joining the cast, she will not appear in the film.” Redgrave reportedly has a cameo appearance. Nero plays the leading role.
Paul Schrader made headlines at the time for supporting Spacey’s comeback, writing on Facebook: “About time. If he’s guilty of a crime, lock him up. If not, let him act. Many great artists were bad people.”
