Jon Bernthal unfolds his charm as a male escort in the teaser for Showtime’s American gigolo series

Jon Bernthal showed a new side of himself when the teaser trailer for Showtime’s upcoming American gigolo series was released on Tuesday.

The 45-year-old King Richard actor plays a male escort fresh out of prison after serving 15 years in prison for wrongful murder.

The series is a remake of the 1980 classic of the same name, starring Richard Gere and directed by Taxi Driver writer Paul Schrader.

Bernthal can be seen in the teaser as his character Julian Kaye attempts to reboot his life outside.

He is dating Michelle (Gretchen Mol), who is described as his “one true love” in the show’s synopsis.

“Is that you when you work?” she asks him while lying on her back – fully clothed – while a shirtless Julian leans forward and caresses her face.

A brief montage illustrates his working life, during which he has been seen escorting beautiful women out of sports cars and stripping to reveal his torn abs.

“I can only ever be this other guy,” he replies offscreen after spotting a woman whispering in a bar’s ear.

“This other guy who’s not scared,” he continues as the trailer takes a dark turn.

Julian is then seen in a flashback attempting to revive a bloodied woman in bed.

It’s unclear if he entered her body or if he woke up next to the slain woman, but police arrive at the worst possible time as he attempts to flee the scene.

“I jump into the water and wash him off,” he says of his other life. “Then I can be me.”

A final quick montage highlights the contradictions of Julian’s post-prison life as he attempts to renew his relationship with Michelle in a stylish, red-drenched scene juxtaposed with yet another run-in with the law.

Julia throws his hands in the air as cops jump out of their vehicles with guns pointed at him.

Leland Orser, who plays a tech billionaire, is also seen briefly.

“You can’t let him see you – he’ll just do it again!” she yells at the gigolo.

Meanwhile, Rosie O’Donnell makes a brief cameo as Detective Sunday, who helped take Julian away and is still searching for the true origins of the crime that got him jailed.

“It’s hard to believe that more than 40 years have passed since the film release of American Gigolo and now we have the chance to continue the story of American Gigolo as a TV series,” said Executive Producer Jerry Bruckheimer – who produced the original film – to Entertainment Weekly on Tuesday. “Expect heightened mystery, danger and desire as Jon Bernthal takes the film’s iconic character on a contemporary, exciting journey.”

The show’s cast also includes Lizzie Brocheré as Isabelle, who has inherited a sex workers’ organization, and Wayne Brady, who guest-stars as Julian’s best friend Lorenzo.

Gabriel LaBelle appears in flashback scenes as a younger version of Julian, back when he was known as Johnny.

No release date has yet been set for American Gigolo.
