As we near the spookiest time of year, we’re getting more and more information about Disney’s latest movie based on a classic attraction. The haunted house. Disney had previously made a live-action version of the ride starring Eddie Murphy in 2003, but the film was a huge flop. It currently sits at 13% on the Tomato Meter and has a 30% viewer rating on rating website Rotten Tomatoes. However, Disney is going all out with this new take on the film, casting big names like Rosario Dawson, Danny DeVito, Owen Wilson and Tiffany Haddish.
Now we have more big casting news. Corresponding One take news, Disney cast Oscar-winner Jared Leto to pay for the iconic hatbox ghost. The Hatbox Ghost originally debuted with the opening of The Haunted Mansion at Disneyland Park in 1969, but was quickly removed. For decades the Hatbox Ghost was gone, but reappeared in 2015 and is now a staple of the ride.

Sources have told OTN that the Hatbox Ghost’s design will be quite similar to that of the Haunted Mansion ride. We’ve also heard Jared Leto’s face will be featured in Renaissance paintings throughout the mansion. While unconfirmed, we’ve heard that his face will only appear in the paintings and only his voice will come out of the hatbox Ghost, a character who appears to be CG. We were told that the voice for his character was not his normal and would be deeper with some high pitched cackles.

The film tells the story of a doctor played by Rosario Dawson, and her nine-year-old son, who want to start a new life. When they find an incredibly affordable mansion in New Orleans, they jump at the chance to change their lives. Little do they know that the house is already home to some unexpected residents. When they discover the mansion is haunted, they contact a priest played by Owen Wilsonwho in turn seeks the help of a scientist and wriggling paranormal expert played by LaKeith Stanfieldand a French Quarter psychic played by Tiffany Hadishand a grumpy historian played by Danny DeVito.
The film not only embellishes the familiar and frightening characters of The Haunted Mansion, but also explores the rich culture of New Orleans, home of Disneyland, California. The film will feature both new and old characters and will employ some of the most sought-after talent in filmmaking today. The film is directed by Justin Simien, who previously directed Dear White People. The screenplay was written by Kate Dippold.
Disney’s The haunted house is scheduled to hit theaters on March 10, 2023. There’s no word yet on when it will be released on Disney’s Disney+ streaming service. Although the original live action haunted mansion Film was a flop, Disney found much success with its hilarious muppets haunted house, the final Halloween season came out.
