“I know a lot about Marilyn Monroe now. I’ve read all the important stuff. There are over a thousand books written about her and I haven’t read a thousand but I have read all the big hits. I read all that stuff and I met people who knew her and I’ve been to most of the places (that you can still empathize with) where she lived, I read all the bios of all the other people that was in her life too, so I know what she thinks happened in most situations in her life.”

“And I’m aware of how that differs from the book Blonde. I did all this research and used very little of it in the film,” he added. “The book Blonde was pretty much the bible for the movie.”

In another interview with The New Yorker, Oates shared that the film version is “An artwork” and is “not a feel-good film.”

“A lot of films about Marilyn Monroe are kind of upbeat and have a lot of music and singing. She is very beautiful and sweet. This one probably comes closer to what she actually experienced. The last few days of her life were brutal.”
