Not only are the Montreal Canadiens hosting the NHL draft in July, they also have a chance to be the headliners after winning the draft lottery on Tuesday night.

The Canadians retain their No. 1 title, a ray of hope after a turbulent season that saw them change coaches, overhaul their front office, finish bottom in the standings and most recently mourn the death of former star Guy Lafleur.

“I can only imagine the growing anticipation, excitement and interest in the Montreal Canadiens,” said General Manager Kent Hughes of the city and fanbase that lives and breathes “Bleu Blanc et Rouge” year-round. “They hope that as an organization you don’t pick No. 1 overall too often, but when you’re in that situation it’s very special.”

The New Jersey Devils’ lottery luck continued, winning the second of two lottery draws to move up from fifth to second place. It’s the fourth time the Devils have been draft lottery winners since 2011, which resulted in them landing the No. 1 picks in both 2017 and 2019.

“Adding another core to our group is all that any team wants to continue doing, and this will allow us to do that,” Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald said of a team that has missed the playoffs in nine of its last ten seasons. “So who this player could be, no idea, but we’re happy to have won the lottery.”

The Devils’ win moved Arizona from second to third place, Seattle to fourth and Philadelphia to fifth. The remaining places from 6th to 16th remained unchanged depending on where the teams finished in the standings.

The bottom 16 spots in the draft order are determined by where teams finish in the playoffs.

Ontario Hockey League center Shane Wright is recognized as this year’s top draft prospect, ranked first among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.

Wright, who hails from Burlington, Ontario and plays for the Kingston Frontenacs, has the opportunity to become the first OHL player to be drafted first since Edmonton picked No. 1 Connor McDavid in 2015. Wright averaged 1.49 points per game with 32 goals and 62 assists in 63 regular season games this season.

Wright said he can’t watch the draft lottery because he’s preparing to enter a playoff game.

Slovak Juraj Slafkovsky takes first place among international talents. He scored seven goals to earn MVP honors at the Beijing Winter Olympics in February and helped Slovakia win bronze – the country’s first Olympic ice hockey medal. The 6-foot-3-winger has a chance to become the highest-drafted Slovakian-born player after Marian Gaborik was picked third by Minnesota in 2000.

The top US-born contestant is Logan Cooley of the United States Development Program, ranking second among North American skaters. He’s from the Pittsburgh area.

Montreal had the best odds of winning the No. 1 — albeit just 18.5% — becoming the 10th team to finish last and retain the top pick since the NHL introduced the lottery in 1995.

The Canadians had to wait a long time to host the draft, which was scheduled for July 7th and 8th. Montreal was originally slated to host the event in 2020, but the last two drafts have been held remotely because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Hughes said it was too early to determine which player the Canadians might be targeting. Hughes, a former agent, took the job January 19, replacing Marc Bergevin. Hughes also reshuffled the front office, firing coach Dominique Ducharme in February and replacing him with Martin St. Louis, who retains the interim coaching tag.

The Canadians went from reaching the 2021 Stanley Cup Finals, which they lost in five games to Tampa Bay, to a 22-49-11 finish — the franchise’s fewest wins in a 60-game season.

Montreal is the first team to host the draft and has ranked No. 1 since Toronto in 1985 when the Maple Leafs picked Wendel Clark.

The draft lottery also placed two picks in the top 16.

Chicago’s sixth-ranked pick goes to the Columbus Blue Jackets as part of the trade in which the Blackhawks took over Seth Jones last summer. The Blue Jackets will also pick 12th place.
