A look at what’s happening around the majors today:

pinstripe problems

The AL-leading Yankees have been healthy for the most part this season and are suddenly grappling with injuries to several key players.

All-star infielder DJ LeMahieu was a late scratch from New York’s lineup Tuesday night with left wrist discomfort, Aroldis Chapman was put on the injured list with left Achilles tendonitis, and hitter Giancarlo Stanton was removed with right calf strains in the win over Baltimore .

LeMahieu had an MRI that came back clean. He was given a cortisone shot and could be back in a day or two. Stanton was due to have an MRI on Wednesday.

LeMahieu, a two-time hitting champion, is hitting .250 with three homers and .704 OPS this season. He is 5 for 39 (.128) in his last 10 games.

New York also activated catcher Kyle Higashioka from the COVID-19 injured list on Tuesday, but left fielder Joey Gallo and third baseman Josh Donaldson stayed out with the virus. Gallo has tested negative and trained at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday. It could be activated on Wednesday.

The Yankees will give left-hander JP Sears his first major league start against the Orioles. The 26-year-old has dominated Triple-A this season, serving two scoreless innings in two relief games for the big club.

LUCKY SEVEN

Minnesota and Boston are rolling, and both teams will be looking to claim their seventh straight win.

Dylan Bundy (3-2, 5.14 ERA) plays for the Twins at home against Detroit, who are 3-15 in their last 18 games at Target Field. Bundy will make his seventh start of the season on his cautious return from COVID-19. He threw 54 pitches over three shutout innings on May 17, his first outing after a 13-day hiatus.

The twins in first place are 23-8 as of April 21st.

New second baseman Trevor Story is hitting .355 with seven home runs and 18 RBIs in his last 31 at-bats for the Red Sox, in their longest streak since nine straight wins in April 2021. They send Rich Hill (1-1, 3 .90 ERA) to the dam against Lucas Giolito (2-1, 2.84) and the White Sox in Chicago.

HUGE PERFORMANCE

A day after a wild slugfest, the Mets and Giants play the rubber match of their three-game series in San Francisco.

Joc Pederson hit three homers and ran a career-high in eight runs, including a single tie with two outs in the ninth inning as the Giants clinched a 13-12 win Tuesday night despite losing a late six-run lead.

Francisco Lindor hit a homered and had six RBIs for the Mets, who plan to bring Triple-A Syracuse left-hander Thomas Szapucki to his first major league start in the series finals.

New York has 25 runs in the first two games of the series.

AUGUST PRELUDE

Two starting pitchers that could be attractive trade targets before the Aug. 2 deadline go head-to-head when Kyle Hendricks (2-4, 4.89 ERA) and the Chicago Cubs Luis Castillo (0-2, 4.60) and visit the Cincinnati Reds. Hendricks is looking to rebound after hitting a career high by allowing four homers against Arizona on Friday. Castillo is making his fourth start since the start of the season on the injury list with a right shoulder strain.

THAT HURTS

Milwaukee will be without Hunter Renfroe for a while after the outfielder was placed on the 10-day injury list on Tuesday with a strained right hamstring.

Renfroe was injured during a 10-inning loss in San Diego Monday night. He hit .266 with nine homers and 16 RBIs for the NL Central Leaders.

Brewery manager Craig Counsell said an MRI showed weak strain in the hamstring and Renfroe could miss two weeks. Infielder-outfielder Mark Mathias hails from Triple-A Nashville.
