Ohio State Football landed its quarterback for the Class of 2024 when it received a commitment from Chandler (Ariz.) High Five Star Dylan Raiola Monday. 247Sports Director of Recruiting Steve Wiltfong broke down what the Buckeyes are getting in Top247’s No. 1 overall prospect for the junior ascending cycle, including a Patrick Mahomes Comparison.
“Well, (they get) the No. 1 player in the country on 247Sports.” said Wiltfong. “You get a player with a great pedigree. The young man’s father played in the NFL for the Detroit Lions for 14 years. He was a two-time All-American at the University of Nebraska and his number is retired at Lincoln. His mother was a swimmer and water polo player at the University of Hawaii and his older sister plays volleyball at TCU, so a very competitive group.
“I was at Chandler High School training today and you see all the leadership qualities. He just moved here from Burleson, Texas, and the leadership role he’s already taken on with his new teammates is truly one of the powerhouses out west. “Was really impressive. He has so much control and he’s just a great football player who can throw anything. He threw for 3,300 yards and 32 touchdowns as a sophomore. He ran for nine more points.
“He is very accurate in football, can throw from different arm angles. He kind of gets those Patrick Mahomes comparisons in that regard, but he can get things moving, throw at all levels of the field, just a great competitor and a young man who’s our No 1 in the country for all of those reasons.”
Raiola is ranked #8 overall by the industry-generated 247Sports Composite, #3 quarterback, and #1 Arizona for the 2024 class.
“Looks like it from a physical point of view,” says Raiola’s scouting report from 247Sports. “Two sports that also play baseball and have a nice athletic profile. Well proportioned body and frame. Robust lower body that generates power and speed on throws. Shows encouraging athletics that should continue to improve as his career progresses.
“Good stature in the pocket with a smooth, easy release. Raiola has above-average mobility and is able to buy time while locating his receivers and progressing smoothly. Lightning plus arm power to execute the throws from a variety of arm angles with speed or touch as needed. Get the zip out of your pocket when you’re on the go.
“Willing to be in the pocket and deliver passes under pressure. Keeps eyes down when bag closes. Can’t be caught looking at the rush. He has good touch on his deep passes, allowing receivers to run under to make the catch. Shows good pocket presence and awareness. Can tuck the ball to run when needed to gain a lot of yards.
“A young player who, even after two years of high school, has very few gaps in his game. Mechanically ahead of the curve and possessing the arm strength that puts him in elite company. The more he plays and has reps, the faster his decision making and feeling becomes second nature. Should be a Power Five starter for several years and a potential all-conference pick with an early-round NFL Draft advantage.
